Welcome to my webpage!

Hi! I am Abhi Mondal, a Fourth year BSMS student at IISER Kolkata, majoring in Physics with a minor in Computational and Data Science. I am currently interested in exploring Quantum Information and sensing. I did some interesting works on the observation of beam shift on plasmonic systems (These are some fancy terms 😉, in simple words these are light matter interactions). Beyond academics, I am a Bengali literature enthusiast. I love to capture moments. Also, I am a guitar enthusiast. This space is my little corner for sharing thoughts, photos, and the occasional random ramble.

Symphony of light💡

I have been working with beams of light, and it never fails to keep me curious. My interest began back in high school with interference, and since then light has remained both fascinating and unpredictable. It behaves in many ways — almost like people — which means you need a little patience when dealing with it! Maxwell laid the foundations in classical electrodynamics, and his work is always worth revisiting. Feynman, of course, performed his miracles in quantum chromodynamics, though that remains outside my present scope. And if you spend enough time with light, you will inevitably run into Fourier, so getting to know him early is always a wise move.

Here are some book suggestions — because who doesn't love a little extra suffering with maths 🤓

  • Introduction to Electrodynamics by David J. Griffiths (the holy book of electrodynamics)
  • Principles of Optics by Born and Wolf (the holy book of optics)
  • Optics by Eugene Hecht (a good book for optics)
  • The Feynman Lectures on Physics, Vol. II (classical electromagnetism and matter)

Dancing of Plasmons 🌟🌀

After exploring photonics, I stumbled upon the world of metamaterials, and more precisely, plasmonics. Honestly, this has been one of the most memorable encounters of my life, right after humans, if you know what I mean. While humans drift in and out of life, plasmonics has been quietly by my side 😂. Enough! It is a fascinating phenomenon, especially useful for designing sensors for biological systems, and plays a crucial role in information transmission. To dive deeper, a clear understanding of the refractive index of materials and the interaction of light with matter is highly desirable. But those are just bookish words — feel free to explore things on your own; after all, that is what humans are supposed to do.

Here are some book suggestions 🤓

  • Plasmonics: Fundamentals and Applications by Stefan A. Maier (essential for modern plasmonics)
  • Surface Plasmons on Smooth and Rough Surfaces and on Gratings by Heinz Raether (a classic on surface plasmon theory)
  • Absorption and Scattering of Light by Small Particles by Bohren and Huffman (a classic book on different scattering phenomenon)

Stories that stayed 🌿

I mostly read books in Bengali. Not because English books offend me or anything, but when academics already demand enough English, I prefer to keep my reading in the language that feels like home. Some people may relate, others may politely pretend to. My journey into Bengali literature is not terribly long — like most of my generation, it began with comic books and the timeless fairy tales of ঠাকুমার ঝুলি. I truly fell in love with the language during my ninth standard, when novels stopped being “schoolwork” and started becoming a world of their own. There is still so much left to read, so much waiting to be discovered. I do have a few suggestions — feel free to explore ✨

And of course, there are countless more treasures I can't possibly list here — literature has a habit of keeping its best surprises off the page until you find them yourself!
